Why Smoothies Are The Original Energy Drink And A Late Summer Recipe For Fighting Fatigue
Way before Red Bull gave us wings, there were people blending fruits and vegetables and nuts and seeds around the world. Smoothies are the original energy drink!
Filling your blender with sources of fuel our cells actually require can be formulated to also be a fully balanced meal or snack. Blood sugar balance for a smoothie requires a bit of strategy as so many fruits can come with a high sugar wallop, but luckily it’s the season of fresh berries and stone fruit.
So while we’re in the last throws of the heat of summer, I’m sharing my latest fave smoothie recipe that features some of this late season produce.
This recipe also features blood sugar balancing ingredients like cinnamon and 9g of fibre. It’s packed with vitamin A, C and calcium. Plus, 3mg of iron—a mineral that is key for fighting fatigue.
Tip: Chop up the fresh fruit from the farmer’s market now and toss it in the freezer for those back-to-school September mornings!
Raspberry Nectarine Smoothie
Ingredients:
1/3 cup Frozen raspberries
1/2 Nectarine
1/2 cup Baby spinach
1/2 cup Organic soy milk (I love this one from Eden)
1/2 cup Water
2 tbsps Vegan vanilla protein powder (I love this one from Botanica)
1 tbsp Ground flaxseed
1 1/2 tsps chia seeds
1/2 tsp Cinnamon (opt for ceylon cinnamon if possible for all the health benefits)
1 tbsp Raw walnuts
Directions:
Combine raspberries, nectarines, spinach, water, and soy milk in the blender and blend on medium for 30 seconds to begin mixing them together.
Add protein powder, chia seeds, cinnamon, flax, and walnuts then blend on high for another 30 seconds.
Pour into a glass and enjoy!
Note: I’ve found that adding two steps of blending helps to ensure all ingredients get properly blended and incorporated. And you don’t end up with a puff of missing powder on the lid.
